June 12, 2015 — The Utah Attorney General’s Office is pleased to announce that Utah’s current Solicitor General, Bridget Romano, has accepted the position of Chief Civil Deputy when General Brian Tarbet retires in late-summer. In her new capacity, SG Romano will oversee the Education, Environment & Health, Highways & Utilities, Litigation, Natural Resources, State Agency Counsel and Tax & Financial Services divisions. The Utah AGO has not named an anticipated replacement for the position of Solicitor General.

“General Tarbet led this office through extremely difficult times and circumstances.  The respect he has earned from leaders around the state is only surpassed by the respect and admiration he has from those within the Attorney General’s Office. In many ways, he is irreplaceable,” said AG Reyes. “Fortunately, we have many exemplary leaders in our office capable of leading the Civil Department. After months of interviews and deliberation, it was clear that Solicitor General Romano is the right person for the job at this time. Not only is she one of Utah’s most skilled attorneys, she has also proven to be an effective leader in her role as Solicitor General. She has tremendous support and respect within the office from management, line attorneys, paralegals, staff and investigators.”

SG Romano has been with Utah Attorney General’s Office since 1996, leaving for two short periods to work in private practice.  She currently serves as Chair of the Utah State Bar, Appellate Practice Section and is on the Utah Supreme Court’s Appellate Rules Advisory Committee. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science/Economics from the University of Utah where she graduated Magna Cum Laude and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa Honor Societies.  She received her law degree from the University of Utah, S.J. Quinney School of Law.

Since July 2011, Bridget Romano has served as Utah Solicitor General/Civil Appeals Director, where she oversees the Appeals Department and has been chief appellate advocate for Utah.  Prior to becoming Solicitor General, she held the position of Assistant Attorney General and represented the State’s interests before Utah’s state and federal appellate and trial courts and before various administrative agencies.  In taking the helm of the Civil Division, SG Romano will be the highest ranking woman in the history of the Utah Attorney General’s Office other than former Attorney General Jan Graham.
